Editing Aquaponics Secrets

We’ve had a number of people asking what happened to the release of the Aquaponics Secrets DVD? Over the last 12 months we have been filming an Aquaponics kit system from start to finish. We wanted to show the tiny fingerlings grow to maturity over the course of a year.
The fish are still growing. We’re still filming them, but they are not quite plate size and not really ready for harvest at the moment. In fact we’ve grown quite fond of them and don’t want to see them end up on the barbecue plate! |

Organic Farming - "The Missing Link"
From Treehugger.
In the run up to the Copenhagen summmit, the organization is releasing a new report that describes organic farming as "the missing link" at COP15. the report argues that up to 86% of agriculture's potential for climate change mitigation lies in carbon sequestration in soils; that organic farming results in 20%-28% higher levels of soil carbon compared to non-organic farming; and that a global conversion to organic farming could sequester up to 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Yandina Community Gardens Aquaponics systems
Aquaponics system at Yandina gets a mention in the community gardens blog here, and in the local newspaper here,
The system was designed and installed by Practical Aquaponics. There are three systems on display, A modified Homestead, a Balcony single bed, and a bathtub DIY system. These are to show how Aquaponics can be done from a simple DIY system such as two old bathtubs right up to the state-of-the-art ready Homestead kit.

How To - Control bugs naturally in your Aquaponics Garden.
Gardening the natural way can be a little difficult when it comes to controlling bugs and insects in the garden.
In a natural veggie garden we do not want to kill every insect that may inhabit our garden. Some insects such as Australian native and European honey bees are most welcome. There are many others we could list such as some of the Lady Beetle family.
When we are confronted with an insect imbalance there needs to be some natural non synthetic chemical way of getting things back into balance.

Aquaponics Cabbage - a whopper.
This drumhead cabbage is a whopper. 10 inches across or 255mm. Do not have any scales up at the house but my guess is about 9 lb or 4kg.

Not bad , grown in a 4 year old Aquaponics flood and drain 300mm (12") deep gravel grow bed system, that has never been cleaned out or dug up in that time, has a heap of earth worms living in the beds. The media is 20mm (3/4") gravel (blue metal). The flood and drain is achieved using auto siphons and the system runs on the CHOP system. The powerhouse has approx 100 Jade Perch 120 Barramundi fingerlings in floating cages, and assortment of Bass and Yellow Belly also in floating cages.

Urban farming can boost world food security says FAO
With the world's cities growing rapidly, farming in and around urban areas needs to play a bigger role in feeding city populations, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on World Environment Day (June 5. 2009).
FAO said that nearly all of the world's population growth between now and 2030 will be concentrated in urban areas in developing countries. By then almost 60% of people in developing countries will live in cities.

Citrus trees in Kitchen Garden Aquaponics kits.
I have just planted a few Citrus trees. One Lisbon lemon, one Washington Navel and one Tahitian Lime.
Planted them into Kitchen Garden kits just to see how they will go. All are putting on new growth, especially the Orange. It is in full flower and fruit is setting.
Also have lettuce etc growing in the gravel beds.
The three Citrus systems are running off one pump and the fish tanks are joined with a 40mm balancing pipe, so water flows from the outer systems into the middle one where the pump is located. Auto siphons in each bed take care of the flood and drain.

Hydroponic Ferris Wheel Optimizes Growth: The OmegaGarden (Video)

When I wrote about marijuana as a possible gateway to farming, I noted that much of the hydroponic supply market seems to be marketed toward, shall we say, recreational growers of certain herbs - and often not very subtly. But as we've seen, hydroponics also has applications in everything from rooftop agriculture to Intergrated backyard Aquaponics But how energy and water efficient is it to grow under lights and without soil? One Vancouver-based company is aiming to optimize the efficiency of hydroponics with these rotary hydroponic ferris wheels. And they are marketing themselves firmly to the urban farming crowd, before you ask. |

Another shire rejects GM crops

Margaret River Shire goes GE free!
20 August 2009
Last week Margaret River Shire Council unanimously passed a motion saying that it did not support the use of genetically engineered (GE) crops in the shire.
This means that, so far, a total of six of the eight shires in Western Australian Agriculture Minister Terry Redman’s electorate have passed anti-GE motions.

Oakleaf lettuce
Here is a photo of an oakleaf green lettuce just taken out of my floating raft Aquaponics system.
Weight is 428 g including roots.
Industry minimum standard is supposed to be minimum 235 g
Next time you are in one of those fresh veggie places just get a hydro grown lettuce and take it to the scales and weigh it. You will be surprised just how little value you are getting.
I have weighed them as light as 125 g
